Backyard Burning

Backyard burning in the Hoodland Fire District  

To report a threatening fire, call 9-1-1.   

HFD burn information line:  (503) 622-3463  Always call the Fire District’s burn information line before you burn. Open burning violations can result in penalties of up to $10,000 per day.  D.E.Q. has the authority under state law to prohibit open burning anywhere in the state on a day to day basis.  The Fire Chief or HFD authorized personnel may revoke or suspend any permit whenever, in their judgment, any violation warrants such action.

WARNING: GASOLINE AND OTHER FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS ARE VERY VOLATILE AND DANGEROUS.  DO NOT USE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS TO START YOUR FIRE.

Burning of UNCUT grass brush or vegetation is prohibited.

May contain: person, human, truck, transportation, and vehicle
Fires must be at least 10' from structures and property lines.

The following materials are prohibited from being burned:

  • Rubber products
  • Tires
  • Plastics
  • Paint
  • Tar
  • Asphalt
  • Shingles
  • Household garbage
  • Petroleum & petroleum-treated materials
  • Industrial waste
  • Any material that creates dense smoke or noxious odors.
May contain: human, person, flame, bonfire, fire, vegetation, plant, and outdoors
Backyard burns are yard debris disposal fires of cut wood, trees, shrubs or plants.

Burn piles 5ft. X 5ft. X 5ft or smaller: Yard debris disposal fires (i.e. wood, needle or leaf material from trees, shrubs or plants) can be 5ft. X 5ft. X 5ft or smaller.  Materials should be dry and not produce dense smoke or noxious odors. Burn piles under 5ft. x 5ft. x 5ft. do not require a permit or an inspection.  

Large piles over 5ft. x 5ft. x 5ft: Burn piles larger than 5ft. x 5ft. x 5ft. require an on site inspection to receive a burn permit.  To request an on site inspection, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page. 

Back yard burn piles must be constantly attended by a competent person, until the material is completely burned out or extinguished.

Adequate provisions shall be made to prevent the fire from spreading. These may include a fire line around the burn area, and having such items as a charged hose line or shovels or other fire tools available during the burn.   

Burn piles must be 10' from structures and property lines.
